You CAN Go Back to Mayberry
AUNT BEA CAN COOK!
Scratch! Seasonal! Local!
Check it out - eggs delivered to our door in Mt.Airy NC (aka Mayberry) when we visited friends with my brother and sister-in-law in Feb. Our friends own an event space & farm, The Barn at Blueberry Hill http://www.blueberryhillweddingbarnelkinnc.com/ and we stayed in one of the venue’s overnight accommodations - The Farmhouse. It was delightful. Sandra and Junior, our hosts, had a beautiful snack platter laid out and waiting for us with various cheeses, crackers, hummus etc. So thoughtful! We spent the next day having fun in "Mayberry”, where we ate at Aunt Bee’s Diner, stopped in to visit at Floyd’s Barber Shop, and picked up our “Police Cars” at Wally’s Service Station to tour all that is Mayberry, That’s my brother Michael and sister-in-law Susan in the pic.
including Andy Griffith’s childhood home and the LARGEST GRANITE QUARRY IN THE WORLD! Sirens wailed, laughter echoed, and a general darn fine time was had by all. We took a picture with Andy & Opey - below. They were “goin’ fishin’”. There are also a couple of amazing museums in town - The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History https://www.northcarolinamuseum.org/and the Andy Griffith Museum. I got locked up in Otis’ CELL!! Did you know Thelma was born there too?!? https://www.surryarts.org/agmuseum/
NORTH CAROLINA WINE?!?
I am a wino. I have never hidden the fact. I love the culture of winemaking all across the world. I can also be a snob. I certainly did not think that I would have a FIT about ANY wine in North Carolina. But here we are at Shelton Vineyard https://www.sheltonvineyards.com , a BEAUTIFUL winery where we had lunch and a tasting and me falling in love with quite a few of their varieties, the most spectacular (for me) being their reserve Riesling. I went “to church” on Pilot Mountain (Mt. Pilot in the series - where I was mesmerized by several species of raptors dancing in the sky. The wind there is famous for this. I learned something new (always!) - birds fly in headwinds, tailwinds, and sidewinds - just like planes! That last statement was tongue in cheek by the way :) If you ever want a “back to nature with a small town feel” vacation - this is the ONE!
