A Love Letter To My Father In Law
He IS a handsome devil isn't he?!? My dad is no longer with us, and though I hold him in my heart, I have another dad that I'd like to celebrate this year. Claude Purvis, Gordon's father, is a PIECE OF WORK. I do believe that if I didn't find and marry Gordon, in another life or time, if Claude and I had met we would become fast friends.
Claude has been a champion of mine, and us, since the day I met him. He's very supportive and anytime I have asked something of him he has stepped up without hesitation. He's smart, funny, generous, successful, and a gentleman. In fact, though he's given up much of his "gentleman farmer" efforts in his later years, some of you have actually had his beef and eggs.
He loves cats and dogs and FOOD. He would probably be mad at me if I showed you a picture of his last Thanksgiving plate (yes, I took one because I was HIGHLY amused and flattered by his generous helpings)
We are simpatico in many areas and have lively talks about "the state of the world", and I love his stories of childhood and family! He's an avid flea market and auction goer, and loves the thrill of the "find". In short, my father in law Claude, is an all around great guy, and I love him! Happy Father's Day, Claude!
A Note From Chef Lori
I've been on some meds that have changed my palate. I've never been a sweets fan, but that has CHANGED. I looked over past blogs to see if I'd given this information before and I haven't, so I think you'll appreciate all of the names on labels that really mean sugar. Here's why it's important: SUGAR IS PHYSICALLY ADDICTIVE. Just like a narcotic. It affects dopamine receptors and causes the brain to behave as if it's reacting to a narcotic pleasure loop. And sadly, almost anything "white" has hidden sugar in it. Here are most of the names you will find on the back (or FRONT!) of a food label that mean SUGAR: Fructose, Sucrose, Agave, Dextrose, Lactose, Galactose, High Fructose Corn Syrup (we all knew that, didn't we?), Xylitol, Sorghum, Stevia, Treacle, Sucanat, Panela, Evaporated Cane Juice, Dextran, Anhydrous Dextrose
