Don't get Zoncked this New Year's Eve!

Winter

Ever heard (or used) the phrase "I zoncked out!"?  Or, "I'm ZONckered!!" - well, I now can tell you where the phrase comes from, as I'm sure you're all as interested in gastro-etymology as I am ...

ZINC was a popular bar top in France over a century ago and remains in many pubs and bars across Europe.  The french pronunciation of zinc is zonc.  The word zinc over the years came to be used as a description of one who is drunk, or who passes out, pronounced zonc.  There you have it.  But don't do it!
